Organising Committee

Member of the Oxford Martin School, with an affiliated appointment at the University of Cambridge. His research lies at the intersection of AI safety, statistical learning, robustness, and alignment of foundation models. His work was recognized with various fellowships and competitive grants from UKRI, COST and other international programs. He organized the 2025 ML for Drug Discovery Workshop and the 2025 LLM@Oxford Workshop.

CNRS Senior Researcher at the Department of Mathematics and Applications of École Normale Supérieure. His research lies at the interface of applied mathematics, optimal transport, machine learning, and the life sciences, with contributions spanning optimization dynamics, ResNets, transformers, and single-cell genomics. Recipient of three ERC grants, the CNRS Silver Medal, the Blaise Pascal Prize of the French Academy of Sciences, and the Magenes Prize of the Italian Mathematical Union. He has co-organised five NeurIPS workshops on Optimal Transport and Machine Learning, and has served as area chair for ICML, NeurIPS, and ICLR.

His research focuses on the statistical and theoretical foundations of machine learning, with particular emphasis on reinforcement learning, optimization, and implicit regularization. He is the recipient of an ERC Consolidator Grant and an Amazon Research Award. Patrick has organised numerous scientific events, including the Mathematics of Machine Learning Summer School at the Alan Turing Institute. He is a Founding Member and current Director of the Oxford ELLIS Unit.

His research focuses on the statistical foundations of reinforcement learning, causal inference, and LLMs. Recipient of the Peter Gavin Hall IMS Early Career Prize, the IMS Tweedie Award, and the Royal Statistical Society Research Prize. Organiser of the 2026 Sanya Workshop on Causality and ML and the MLStat 2026 Conference.

Tenure-track associate professor at the Institute of Natural Sciences and School of Mathematical Sciences, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), and a Global Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. He was previously an assistant professor at the University of Warwick, UK (FAM Division, affiliated with DIMAP), and before that a postdoc researcher at KU Leuven and EPFL from 2019 to 2023. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Automation from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2014 and his PhD from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2019. His research studies the foundations of modern machine learning from the perspective of learning efficiency, nonlinearity, and post-training. He is a recipient of the AAAI New Faculty Award and Rising Stars in AI recognition. He was the main organizer of the NeurIPS 2024 Fine-Tuning Workshop.
